DORAVILLE CITY COUNCIL
DISTRICT TWO

HONEST HARD WORKING COMMON SENSE

MD NASER
THE AMERICAN DREAM IS ALIVE AND WELL

Chittagong, Bangladesh is the second largest city in one of the world’s poorest countries. In 2000, the AVERAGE FAMILY INCOME was $260.00 per YEAR. Last year only 4,900 cars were sold in a country of 175,000,000 people.

MD A Naser, left his country of birth in 1999 to seek a better life in the USA, a life that would have been impossible to achieve in his native country. His life is one of ambition, determination, struggle and achievement against all odds. His story is the American Dream and why he considers the United States of America, the greatest country in the world.

Son and grandson of law enforcement officers, he grew up in a family with few creature comforts. No Car, No Refrigerator, No Washer or Dryer, No Dishwasher, No Air Conditioning (A tropical country for 9 months a year the average temperature exceeds 90 degrees) and a daily struggle to provide the barest of necessities.

His mother and father believed the only way to better their children’s (he has a brother and sister) lives was to ground them in the belief that education would be their path to escape the poverty that engulfed their country. Theirs was a loving, tight-knit family who dreamed of America.

At 16, he earned a rare merit based scholarship and in 1998 graduated at 18 from Omar-Gani –M.E.S College of the University of Chittagong earning a degree in Business and Accounting. Shortly, after 11 years of trying, he was finally selected in a US State Department Lottery for promising applicants to legally emigrate to the United States in 1999.

Despite his education, the only job he could find was a stock clerk at Publix Supermarkets. While he could read and write English, he had an immigrant’s difficulty with the spoken word. He soon mastered the language, memorized the bar code of every item in the store and was promoted to cashier. He also worked a second job at local convenience stores. For three years , working 80 – 100 hours per week at little more than minimum wage. he supported himself and was able to pay the way for his Father, Mother and Brother to come to America in 2007.

MD became a full citizen of the US in 2004 while working two full time jobs, attending Georgia Piedmont College and paying for the legal immigration of his family. In 2009 following the tradition of his father and grandfather, he became a corrections officer with the DeKalb County Sherriff’s Office. Now an 15 year veteran, he has distinguished himself by treating his charges and fellow employees with dignity and respect.

Married, with 4 children, he is a leader in the Bengali community. He recently completed a four year term as a city councilman in Doraville. He is a proud Muslim, grounded in his faith, where love of God and love for one another, is a tenet of his faith.

He wants you to know that not all Muslims are alike. In Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to drive, while in his country of birth, Bangladesh, a former Prime Minister is a woman. He follows strict dietary rules, similar to those of an Orthodox Jew, and worships the same God as Jews, Christians and Muslims.

His respect for women is contained in one of his favorite quotes "Give me a good mother and I will give you a good nation."
